For this show I’m joined by two amazing groups with excellent and varied approaches to synth-pop – Architrave and Ionna, as well as another solo performer, Karacell.

Architrave, hailing from upstate NY, bring a tuneful dark vibe. They’ve been described as “musically complex and lyrically rich” and as having “crafted a moody synth-pop sound rooted in the darker side of coping with existence in these times.” This will be their first show in Richmond. They’ve just released a new record called Panic Joy. There’s a great video for the first single, Autofill. Architrave are a favorite of mine and I am thrilled to have a show with them here! spotify • apple • bandcamp

Ionna is a synth-pop duo led by Richmond local Soraya Silene, with a bright and relentlessly hooky energy. Her songs are instantly familiar in the best possible way, rooted in 80s synth-pop, Kate Bush, The Cure, and St.Vincent. RVA Magazine wrote that “she channels atmospheres and machine beats worthy of a John Hughes film“, but I think that’s underselling what she’s doing. I’ve seen Ionna multiple times; her joy in performance is absolutely infectious and she and keyboardist/vocalist Ross Wright have the chops to back it up. spotify • apple • amazon • youtube

I’ll be playing as well with my SYNCRETIST project, performing a set of shredded and reconstructed songs from my “Oscillated Incidents” album. I’ve always worked to bridge electronic textures with proper song structure, and while I perform the set in a kind of DJ like style, as I’ve reworked the tracks they’re becoming more and more songlike. I’ve written songs for a new EP and will be performing several of those as well. Syncretist is influenced by autechre, underworld, steve reich, terry riley, coldcut, mantronix and other early electro.

And a late addition to the bill! The excellent KARACELL from Norfolk, VA will close the show. Karacell’s work has significant range – she has performed live film scores as well as more experimental works. For this show, Karacell will bring a set that is beat heavy, dreamy, and will make your feet move. She describes it as ethereal melodic acid and I’m not going to argue. bandcamp • spotify • website
